You should drink a glass of ice water the first thing in the morning. (I told you it was easy). Why do you need to do that first thing in the morning? Plain and simple, your body functions better when you’re properly hydrated. Since your body is made up mostly of water, all your organs run smoother and better when you’re properly hydrated.

Your skin also has a glow to it when you’re properly hydrated. Last, but even more important, water also helps flush toxins and fat loss byproducts out of your body.

You might say, well that sounds right, but why is it important that I do it as soon as I wake up. The reason’s very simple. You’ve been asleep for eight hours and it’s probably been 8-12 hours since the last time you gave your body any water. So when you wake up you’re already partially dehydrated.

And if you’re like many people and have a couple cups of coffee first thing in the morning (coffee is a diuretic) you’ll only be depleting your body of more water.

Drinking a glass of ice water as soon as you get up will help rehydrate your body and get you started on the right track.

Okay, but you’ve specifically said “ice water”, not just water. Why is ice water important? Again the answer is simple. The ice water is very cold and your body will have to burn extra calories just to warm it up to body temperature.

If you drink a room temperature or even a cool glass of water you’ll get the benefits of hydrating your body. But you won’t get the added benefit of having your body burn extra calories simply because it has to warm up the ice water to raise it to your body temperature.
